Breaking in the New House

It's been crazy this whole between moving things into our new house, school, family, and dealing with the confusion of my dogs. They were confused that we were moving stuff out the old apartment; I could tell because they would just watch us move stuff. Even though this week has been hell, I've still managed to find time to observe these little critters.
Monday after-school I immediately started helping my mom and dad move stuff out our worn out apartment into our new two story house. Huge upgrade. I knew it would be hard to keep the dogs in the apartment while we were moving stuff out, so I decided to take them to the new house and let them see their new home. Now that we had a bigger house with a backyard, I was happy to see the dogs were excited. Max was the explorer, while Chica was being a crybaby. Max was all over the place, trying to see what he can find; while Chica would wanna be carried the whole time.
The dogs were used to sleeping inside the apartment since we didn't have a backyard, which is why I think Chica was acting up. But she had to face the fact that she wasn't allowed in the house any more (my mom was very strict about it.) Max would only cry at night because it was cold, other than that; he was perfectly fine in his new home; and so was I. Max loved the backyard, and once Chica got used to it, she did too. I know inside they're dying to go inside the house, but they were better off outdoors.
I will admit, I was kind of nervous about introducing the new neighborhood to my dogs, and so was my older brother. He went online and looked up what to do ( he was really nervous.) he came across an article on moving with your pets on ASPCA. He told me it was really helpful so I decided I'd read it also. The article said that when you get to the new house, you shouldn't just let the pets run loose because it could be overwhelming for them. It said that you should just introduce them to the place they're going to be spending the most time in. "Home base." So that's exactly what I did with the backyard.
I know Max is still going to try and explore the backyard. I just hope it doesn't kill him.

He has a surprise for me.
What is it gonna be?
He said its done.
When am I gonna get it?
When did he have the idea,
To do this?
I'm so excited,
But annoyed.
He won't tell me.
No matter how much,
I beg, pout, or kiss up.

Grrrr

I found this poem on hellopoetry.com . It made me wonder if my dogs were this curious when we're moving the stuff out; because at some point they did that adorable head tilt. So is this what they were thinking? Curiousity not only killed the cat, it killed the dog; my dogs. They took control of their curiosity and explored the backyard. I say it killed them because their paws are all cut up. It's sad, but you can't let something new take over. A new house isn't going to stop a dog from making it his home. So why should something your curious stop you? Take control of it; even though it may cost you some pain.

  1. Awe your dogs are adorable. I loved how you described one of your dogs as an explorer. Also when you told me about their paws being all cut up from exploring, I was able to visualize those little critters running out into the back sniffing out everything. Good Job.

  2. My dogs hate any kind of change so I can only imagine the anxiety yours must be feeling. I so admire that you and your brother consciously worked to make this easier for you dogs.

  3. Dogs are so smart it amazes me. I love the description of your dog and how you describe him as an explorer. It takes a while for us to get comfortable and used to a new home, imagine a dog who spends their entire day at home, must feel like their leaving a part of themselves behind. Love your blog.

  4. My dogs hate change as well. My boxer, Nani, sleeps with me almost every night. I went on the AVID trip and left for almost six days. My mother told me every night that she waited outside my door for me to let her in.

  5. I think is great that your dogs have more space to roam around outside, when I first got my dog he used to not have as much space as he does now. It might take some time but I don't think it will take a long time, your dogs are adorable and I think it'll be easier for them to get comfortable outside because they'll be together.

  6. You have really cute dogs. I don't have dogs, but I can imagine how they felt about your new house by your description of them. I like how you added the part about not having curiosity stop you even if there is pain involved.

  7. From my own personal experience I also have pretty small dogs so during the winter time my mom lets them sleep inside because its cold, but during the summer time when the weather is warm we have a dog house so they can sleep outside. In the end its your mothers decision just make sure there house is warm enough during the cold night.
